Those who have a deep connection to the natural world speak about it with a clearer understanding, gravitas and authority than those who do not. This is why I am passionate about bringing our political leaders out into the wilderness – so they may fully grasp the value of the natural lands of the United States of America and be empowered to protect it.
Most public servants and campaigners never venture out to experience the very lands they represent and are charged to protect. Going out deep into the wilderness and experiencing it personally deepens your connection and understanding of the value of protecting land. Only by being out in the Great American Wilderness can you see first-hand the impact that industry and we as a society are having on the environment and our public lands.
Excursions can explore deep into currently protected lands (e.g. national parks and monuments) to see the value and nature of these places or go into places with endangered resources which are not currently protected yet are well-deserving of that status. No amount of study or observation from an office can replace the visceral and moving experience of being present in these spaces.
Trips and retreats into the American wilderness is an unforgettable experience and a fantastic opportunity for team building between an elected official (or campaigner) and their staffers. Adventuring in the magnificent richness of our country is a powerful way to build comoraderie with your staffers and staff assistants in this dynamic team building exercise. We couple our excursions with Leave No Trace Education to enrich and deepen the team building experience while creating a mutual foundation for drafting truly impactful climate legislation.
Come with me. Let’s build a deeper understanding of our country, ourselves, our fellow humans and American wildlife – while we have a fun, wild time doing it!
So what does an adventure guide and trip leader do?
Well, think of me as your personal confidant who is by your side from the start to finish of your dream adventure. First you’ll choose your excursion; then I’ll research, plan and book it for you, help you prepare for it, and finally – take you on it! I’ll even do all the driving and cook up your meals in the wilderness. Whether you are a seasoned trekker or it’s your very first time, as an experienced traveler and Wilderness EMT it’s my absolute joy and privilege to assist you and your loved ones to go on your dream vacation in the funnest, safest and most enriching ways possible.
I’ll get to know what makes you passionate about being a public servant (what a way to start a friendship!) and I’ll come up with some potential itineraries inspired by
you! So make sure to come with your inspirations; that could be a list of places you or your staff are dying to visit, things you want to experience, park officials you're interested in meeting, even just some images or a general vibe… share anything and everything that’s important for you to include in your excursion!
I’ll come up with and present to you a few itineraries for your upcoming adventure. You’ll give me your input, pick a couple of your favorites, and then I’ll budget them out for you.
Once you decide on your favorite adventure I take care of the rest. I’ll book everything that has to do with your trip (accommodations, reservations, meetings, tours, permits…
everything) which means that all you have to do is show up on the day of your trip and have a blast! If you chosen a more physically challenging adventure, I’ll develop a workout plan to train you and your staff for it, get you outfitted and even send you a packing list so nothing gets forgotten.
Head out on your adventure with your very own adventure butler (me!). I even pick everyone up at the airport, do all the driving on the trip, cook in the wilderness, tell you stories about the history of the land we're exploring... and I'll even have a few surprises for you along the way.
Want to know more about your upcoming excursion? Of course you do!
Nope. Before planning excursions I sign an NDA and keep all details about our trips completely confidential. I take my client’s privacy and security seriously and will not violate NDA’s. If clients wish to share their experience with the public they are welcome to do so.
Yes! Every client’s staffers, schedules, availability and needs are different. I work with these individuals to ensure everyone is kept in the loop and has the coordination they need to make sure this excursion runs smoothly – even for those who don’t step on the trail!
Time in the wilderness comes with inherent risks, but journeying and recreating responsibly ensures we are doing so in a secure and trustworthy environment. As a wilderness first responder (WFR) I am medically trained to assist those in emergency situations. I also carry a satellite communicator to reach out to emergency services when needed.
Every client has a unique set of requirements to remain secure and have a good time out in the wilderness and public lands. Some may need to be accompanied by security detail, while others may just need to adventure in disguise. I will work with a client’s security team to determine the best course of action to protect a client from the public (as well as the what’s out there in the Great Outdoors!).
A client can expect to work directly with me on a conceptual level to determine their goals and advise them on how to prepare for their excursion. I take care of the ins-and-outs of planning and coordinating the trip personally. Any tasks which can be handled by staffers, staff assistants and security team are, of course, handled with these respective teams.
Absolutely! While those we may encounter on the trail will have their own valuable insight to share, I can also coordinate with your staffers to connect to (or personally reach out to) experts, park superintendents, park staff, scientists and the like to meet with us and connect our experience of the natural space to the practical concerns and insights that these officials have.
Either! Trips can be done individually, but going into the wilderness and adventuring with the people you work with closely is a fantastic team building exercise. Pairing an excursion with Leave No Trace Education is an excellent way to enrich and deepen the team building experience.
Leave No Trace (LNT) is a set of 7 principles that are a guiding set of ethics for sustainability and lessening our impact on the natural world. This serves as an excellent backbone for drafting climate legislation (and in fact, all legislation as it relates to the environment and renewability). Since LNT is a set of ethics rather than rules, learning and attuning to them is best done in an outdoor environment in a visceral, practical and experiential way. LNT education is a fantastic method for team building and can be easily integrated into an excursion. For more information, check out my Leave No Trace Education page.
We can go most anywhere and explore natural spaces, protected lands (e.g. national parks) and endagered resources deserving of protection (e.g. many BLM spaces). In my opinion, it’s always a pleasure and a worthy challenge to immerse ourselves in natural spaces which are impacted by legislation (or lack thereof) to gain a deeper understanding of them.
Nature and adventure doesn’t exclude anyone. I’ll take the time to get to know you and your staff and get a feel for your level of fitness. Afterwards, I’ll design a workout plan to get everyone in fighting shape in time for the excursion. For more info, take a look at my Adventure Training & Coaching page.
